William Durant was forced out of GM and partnered with Louis Chevrolet (a native Swiss race car driver) to form Chevrolet in 1910. By 1916, the brand had grown so rapidly that Durant was able to purchase 54.5% of GM’s shares and to place himself back at the head of the company. At that time, Chevrolet merged with and became a division of GM. In 1918, Chevrolet replaced its V8 with a 6-cylinder engine that had a reputation of being very durable. Soon, it also introduced the Suburban Carryall, which was an SUV precursor.

In 1950, Chevrolet introduced the Powerglide transmission, a low-price fully automatic transmission. Three years later the Corvette, with its innovative plastic body, was released. Then in 1957, Chevy added a fuel-injection engine as an option on some of its cars. It was at this point during the 50s and 60s that Chevy began creating a variety of models, including the Impala and the Corvair, surging ahead of its competitors. Some models were successful while others were not. However, by the 2000s, brand extension began to drag sales down. Chevrolet remains a favorite for its vintage collectables.

Chevy is within the top four brands as perceived by consumers. It is ranked first in performance and within the top five for quality, value, and design. The Corvette is Chevrolet’s longest running model and remains in production today. Some other well-known models produced today are the Camaro, Volt, Impala, Malibu, Tahoe, Suburban, and the Silverado truck.

In the past, Chevy has tried to dominate the truck, pony car, and sports car segments of the industry, but its latest move has been to get a jump on the mini-crossover segment that has only recently begun to emerge.

The Board of Directors for GM consists of one CEO, one Chairman, and eleven other Directors. Directly under them are twenty-one vice-presidents, presidents, and officers. Although Chevrolet is a division of GM, only Cadillac has officers at the second tier of the GM structure.

In 2013, GM sold 2.78 million vehicles, with 1.95 million of those from Chevy–primarily utility vehicles, trucks, and crossovers. Sales increased throughout 2013. Chevrolet represented 12.5% of the U.S. market share. Globally, GM as a whole had a market share of about 17% in Brazil, 14% in Russia, 9% in China, and 3% in India.
