Chung Ju-yung incorporated the Hyundai Motor Company in 1967 in South Korea. One year later, the Cortina was created through a collaboration with Ford. By 1976, the Pony was launched after collaboration with Mitsubishi. This was to be the first car to be exported overseas. However, it was only after the release of the Excel that Hyundai opened up a subsidiary in the U.S. By 1987, the Excel had been the best selling import for three years, and the Grandeur marked the entry of the company into the large luxury car segment of the automotive market.

The late 80s saw the advent of the Sonata and a decline in overall quality of Hyundai’s car lines. In 1998, Hyundai and Kia merged and by 2001 the brand began to win quality awards again, announcing its 10-year/ 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. In 2007, they made this warranty transferable on certain used cars with less than 60,000 miles. Hyundai sells vehicles in more than 5,000 dealerships located in 193 countries.

Hyundai ranks nineteenth in overall brand perception out of all brands. Although a reliability study ranked them fourth out of all vehicles, they did not fall within the top five for quality, safety, performance, value, fuel economy, or design when it came to brand perception.

The Hyundai Sonata is one of the most successful models. However, the Accent, i10, Elantra, Grandeur/ Azera, Santa Fe, and Equus are also popular. Hyundai focused on the midsize and premium market segment over the past few years, but they are committed to producing at least one vehicle each year in a segment of the market that they have not yet developed. As a result, they have recently expanded into the SUV, MPV, and compact sedan segments.

Hyundai has a unique organizational structure. There is a Board of Directors with a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, five Directors and a co-CEO. The second co-CEO is in the next tier with the global president of design. Under this are the twelve subsidies, including Hyundai Motor America. Hyundai Motor America, in turn, has its own CEO with an executive director, managing officers, and vice-president under him.

Sales growth increased in 2013 for the company as a whole but profit growth fell slightly. Overall, they have about 4.7% of the U.S. market share.
